PC Locs

A product that launched on Kickstarter could not afford a release that took hours and took the service down.

The problem

PC Locs makes charging, security and transport hardware for devices. Its TechDen product, a charging "den" with parent and child apps for managing screen time, launched on Kickstarter with demand that could outrun a monolithic app. Releases took several hours, with downtime and no guarantee of success. A separate fleet of connected lockers needed a cloud backend that did not exist.

What we did

Broke TechDen into independently deployable containers on Kubernetes with self-healing, auto-scaling hosts. Moved secrets out of code, put all infrastructure under code, and built a gated CI/CD pipeline with least-privilege access and MFA. For the locker fleet, built a serverless management backend and an admin app, with device identity, certificates and over-the-air updates.

What's simpler now

  • A release that took hours with downtime now completes within minutes with no customer impact.
  • A fleet of devices managed from one place.
